star rating  I arrived early for my exclusive booking of the Red Kite photography hide. The majestic Red Kites were gliding in the thermals in anticipation of what was to come.... read more I was soon set up in the hide (to mount your gimbal remember to bring your own stand - preferred - or tripod). Then it began. It was just magnificent. I got some unbelievable shots. At times, I put my camera down just to stare in amazement at such a wondrous sight of these magnificent creatures. The hide is perfectly positioned for close-up pictures with a 600mm lens, although; 400mm will do. I met the hosts who were very friendly and enthusiastic. The whole site is clean, tidy and well organised.
I was lucky in that it was sunny, and being winter, the sun was low in the sky. This gave the birds a lovely warm light on their undersides, and when flying in a certain direction, gave a beautiful glow through their tail feathers.
For me, it's a 5-hour drive each way to get to the farm. Well worth it. I'm going to have to go again. It would be rude not to.

Once everyone had arrived it was time for the main event so we headed up to the hide, a short walk up from the carpark. The food was put out for the Kites in a field just opposite the hide, but it was raining heavily so it took a bit of time for them to come out, one or two started circling. While we were waiting it gave our guide a great opportunity to fill us in on lots of information about the Kites, she was very knowledgeable! When the Kites did come out, wow what a show they put on! Swooping and diving about, absolutely wonderful to see and we counted about 17 at one point. I will definitely be back!!

Michael our Ranger guide, for the afternoon, soon joined us, and after a short while we went up a short path to the hide overlooking a field. Michael was very thorough in his explanation of the history of Red Kites and what we were likely to see and experience. A few Red Kites were circling the field but once Lynn had spread a few scraps of food in the field an absolute feast for the eyes began, with 20+ Red Kites circling and swooping filling the sky, this truly awesome sight went on for around 30minutes until the birds went back to their roosting in the nearby woods. Marvellous, marvellous experience.
Thanks very much to Lynn and to Michael for a memorable day!
