star rating  A wonderful day spent photographing Red Kites with Lynn giving us a super overview of their history in the UK. We had the option to stay outside on a glorious... read more autumnal day, which gave everyone plenty of space in the sunshine. It was tremendous to see 15-20 birds diving down to pick off pieces of rabbit which had been put out in the field ahead of us. It's all very dramatic, with amazing acrobatics from the birds. 10/10.

  • star rating  I booked the photography hide (in advance) for the afternoon feed, Husband and I were well looked after and taken the short walk to the hide which is closer... read more to the feeding area than the usual viewing point. Set up the camera and waiting for the food to be put out,
The Kites started circling in advance, and then there was a flurry of activity followed by a lull. Then they came back, and it wasn't so frenetic, and I was able to get the best shots I've ever taken of these stupendous birds in flight. There was one who decided this touchdown-grab-go was a waste of time so settled on the grass to eat! Although we'd had dire weather for our two week Scottish holiday it came good for the Argaty visit, which made all the difference,
Will have to do it again, by which time I will have further improved my skills.
It helps to have someone with you who, while you stare through the lens, can hive you information about incoming birds and their trajectory!
I'd recommend Agarty Red Kites for families, but not the photography hide unless the children were really interested.

star rating  Hired the photo hide in the hope of getting some Red Kite shots.

Winter start time 1300 (half hour earlier than summer) to make most of the available light... read more is a great idea.

I had hired the red squirrel hide in the morning so it was a quick stroll back to the car and up to the car park to meet the host.

Literally no more than a minutes drive from
Where is parked for the morning session.

Graciously greeted and shown to the hide, with an added bonus of a recently constructed outdoor viewing platform where a tripod could be set up

I opted for the hide however this platform is a very useful addition, especially for any close proximity overhead shots as there is no roof to obstruct your view

The number of birds present was remarkable. They are quite wary of any change to the environment but at feeding time they are straight in there.

The hide is 35 metres from the feeding station and a long focal length is advisable for the best shots however with longer focal length there is obviously the challenge of getting a bird in shot.

The hide is yours for the afternoon though and there is plenty of time so a missed opportunity isn’t the end of the world. Another will come along

There is a shelf within the hide that a hide clamp can be attached to or a bean bag rested upon. I had to unscrew the bottom clamp grip from my hide clamp to get it to fit the shelf, which was a few millimetres too deep to attach it with both clamps attached, and be aware that the roof overhangs the hide windows quite a bit.

That may frustrate any overhead shot efforts but it does mean that rain intrusion and wet lenses shouldn’t be a problem

All in all a fantastic afternoon which did not feel in any way rushed and having exclusive use of the hide was a pleasure

If there was anything I could change, it would be the hide chairs which are supplied. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great chairs are supplied, however I spent most of the session standing as they were quite noisy (creaky) if you move at all to reposition yourself.

Maybe more of an issue for the squirrel hide than this one though

    Highly recommended.

Michael our Ranger guide, for the afternoon, soon joined us, and after a short while we went up a short path to the hide overlooking a field. Michael was very thorough in his explanation of the history of Red Kites and what we were likely to see and experience. A few Red Kites were circling the field but once Lynn had spread a few scraps of food in the field an absolute feast for the eyes began, with 20+ Red Kites circling and swooping filling the sky, this truly awesome sight went on for around 30minutes until the birds went back to their roosting in the nearby woods. Marvellous, marvellous experience.
Thanks very much to Lynn and to Michael for a memorable day!
